Clinical practice
First nutrition consultation checklist
The first consultation sets the tone. A solid checklist avoids omissions, signals professionalism, and reduces admin work later.
A well-structured first consultation does two things: it gives you the clinical data you need and tells the client they are in good hands. Improvising it is the best way to lose potential clients afterwards.
Before the consultation
- Intake form: personal data, goals, history, medication, allergies.
- Appointment reminder 24 h before with instructions (what to bring, fasting if applicable).
- Clear, signed cancellation policy.
During the consultation
- Explore the real goal (not the stated one): what changes in their life when they reach it.
- Anthropometry: weight, height, circumferences, body composition if you have the gear.
- 24-hour recall or food frequency depending on the case.
- Relevant medical history and medication.
- Lifestyle: work, sleep, physical activity, social context.
- Define plan, expectations, and next appointments with concrete dates.
After the consultation
- Send a written summary and plan within 48 hours.
- Schedule the next appointment and a short intermediate check-in.
- Log everything in the chart; do not trust memory.
Frequently asked questions
How long should it last?
Between 50 and 75 minutes. Less feels rushed; more dilutes focus and lowers hourly profitability.
